Since 1945, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has maintained a list of sites as "World Heritage Sites". The aim of this programme is to classify, name and preserve so-called cultural or natural assets important for the common heritage of humanity.
On the front side in the foreground there is a Roman mirmillon, equipped with a shield and a sword facing a lion. This scene is reminiscent of the "performances" that took place at the Colosseum, where gladiators fought wild beasts to entertain the audience. In the background, the left part of the Colosseum is in detail and the right part is in the schematic line of the building evoking its construction/reconstruction.
